New Zealand’s press is small, concentrated in two publishing groups, and supplemented by an independent sector that has grown considerably in the last decade. The list below covers the dailies, the broadcasters and the newer digital outlets.

The NZ Herald in Auckland and Stuff, which publishes The Post in Wellington and The Press in Christchurch, between them account for most national reading. Otago Daily Times in Dunedin is independently owned and the country’s oldest daily.

Radio New Zealand is the public radio broadcaster, with 1News and Newstalk ZB on the commercial side.

The independent sector is disproportionately influential: Newsroom, The Spinoff, BusinessDesk, NBR, Interest.co.nz and Politik cover politics, business and analysis, and Te Ao Māori News reports from a Māori perspective.

Provincial papers still serve their own districts — the Waikato Times, Taranaki Daily News, Manawatū Standard, Southland Times, Timaru Herald, Gisborne Herald, Ashburton Guardian and Northland Age among them.

Rugby dominates the sports listings through the All Blacks site and RugbyPass, and Farmers Weekly covers an industry central to the economy. Everything publishes in English, with MetService included for weather.
