Korea Newspapers

South Korea has one of the most online news cultures anywhere, and the list below reflects a particular local habit: most readers reach the news through portals rather than going to a newspaper’s own site.

네이버 뉴스 (Naver) and 다음 (Daum) aggregate most of the country’s reading, which is why they sit alongside the papers here rather than below them.

The major dailies divide along a well-known political line. 조선일보 (Chosun Ilbo), 중앙일보 (JoongAng Ilbo) and 동아일보 (Dong-A Ilbo) are the large conservative papers; 한겨레 (Hankyoreh) and 경향신문 (Kyunghyang Shinmun) are their progressive counterparts. 한국일보, 서울신문, 세계일보 and 국민일보 fill out the national field.

Business is a category of its own, led by 매일경제신문 (Maeil Business) and 한국경제 (Korea Economic Daily), with 머니투데이, 이데일리 and 서울경제 alongside.

Broadcast and wire newsrooms — KBS, MBC 뉴스, SBS 뉴스, JTBC 뉴스, YTN and the 연합뉴스 (Yonhap) agency — publish continuously. 오마이뉴스 pioneered citizen journalism and 미디어오늘 covers the media itself.

For English, The Korea Times and The Korea Herald are the two main options. Regional dailies include 부산일보, 국제신문 and 강원일보, and technology is covered by 지디넷코리아 and 전자신문.
