Germany Newspapers

Germany has one of the densest newspaper markets in Europe, and the list below reflects it: national dailies and weeklies, an unusually strong regional press, public broadcasters, and specialist business, technology and sport titles.

The national conversation is shaped by a small group of mastheads. Bild is the mass-market tabloid with the largest reach. Der Spiegel and Die Zeit anchor the weekly end, the first known for investigative reporting, the second for long-form analysis. Among the dailies, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine, Die Welt and Der Tagesspiegel cover the spectrum from centre-left to centre-right, with taz further left. Handelsblatt is the reference for business and markets.

Regional papers carry more weight in Germany than in most countries, a legacy of the country’s federal structure. Titles such as the Augsburger Allgemeine, Badische Zeitung, Rheinische Post, Berliner Zeitung and Aachener Zeitung are the primary local source in their areas rather than supplements to a national paper.

Public broadcasting is a significant part of the mix. Tagesschau, Deutsche Welle, Deutschlandfunk and the regional BR24 publish extensively online and, being licence-funded, sit outside the paywall economy.

Most national titles now run metered or subscriber-only access, so expect article limits on the larger mastheads. Broadcaster sites, and much of the technology and football coverage, remain free to read.
