Austria’s press is small but fiercely competitive, and the list below mixes the national dailies, the strong provincial papers, the public broadcaster, and a number of German titles that Austrian readers follow alongside their own.

Kronen Zeitung has one of the highest per-capita circulations in the world and sets much of the popular agenda, with Heute and Österreich / OE24 competing in the free and tabloid market. Der Standard and Die Presse are the quality dailies, liberal-left and centre-right respectively, and Kurier sits between them.

The provincial press is genuinely dominant in its own territory: Kleine Zeitung in Styria and Carinthia, Oberösterreichische Nachrichten in Upper Austria, Salzburger Nachrichten, Tiroler Tageszeitung, Vorarlberger Nachrichten and the Lower Austrian NÖN.

ORF is the public broadcaster and the most-used news source in the country. Weeklies and magazines — Profil, Falter, Die Furche and the business title Trend — carry the investigative and analytical load.

Everything is in German, and several German mastheads are listed because they are widely read in Austria. Football is covered by Laola1, Ligaportal and the federation’s own ÖFB, and technology by Futurezone.
