Italy Newspapers

Italy’s press is unusually regional for a country of its size, and the list below covers the national dailies, the news agencies, the city papers that dominate their own provinces, and three separate sports dailies.

Corriere della Sera and la Repubblica are the two largest nationals, with La Stampa in Turin and Il Sole 24 Ore covering business and finance. Il Fatto Quotidiano, Il Giornale, Libero, Il Manifesto, Avvenire, Domani and Il Foglio together span an exceptionally wide political range for a market this size.

News agencies are a visible part of Italian reading rather than a background service: ANSA, Adnkronos, Agenzia Giornalistica Italia, Askanews and LaPresse.

Regional dailies carry real weight. Il Resto del Carlino, La Nazione and Il Giorno cover the centre and north, alongside Il Messaggero in Rome, Il Mattino in Naples, Il Secolo XIX in Genoa, L’Eco di Bergamo, Giornale di Sicilia, L’Unione Sarda and Il Gazzettino in the Veneto. In South Tyrol, Dolomiten publishes in German for the province’s German-speaking majority.

Sport has three competing dailies — La Gazzetta dello Sport, Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport — plus club-specific sites. Il Post and Internazionale cover explanatory and international journalism.
